Computer Running Slow? Here’s How to Speed It Up

Restart Your Computer

It sounds simple, but restarting clears temporary files and resets processes that may be bogging down performance.

Check for Too Many Startup Programs

  1. Windows: Press Ctrl + Shift + Esc to open Task Manager > go to the Startup tab > disable unnecessary apps.

  2. Mac: Go to System Settings > Users & Groups > select your user > Login Items.

Run a Virus & Malware Scan

Use trusted antivirus software to check for malicious programs that may be slowing down your machine.

Free Up Disk Space

  • Delete unused files or move them to an external drive/cloud.

  • Empty your Recycle Bin/Trash.

  • On Windows, run Disk Cleanup. On Mac, use Storage Management.

Update Software and Drivers

Outdated software and drivers can cause performance issues.

  • Windows: Settings > Windows Update

  • Mac: System Settings > General > Software Update

Consider Hardware Upgrades

If your machine is still slow:

  • Upgrade your RAM (memory)

  • Switch from a traditional hard drive to a solid-state drive (SSD)
